installation-notes

THIS IS A LIVEDVD! IT WILL ALLOW YOU TO USE AND TEST OS X BEFORE INSTALLING!!

This latest iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Dual Layer ISO combines the simplicity and variety of the iPC OSx86 Universal 10.5.6 V1.1 Installer + a fully functional LiveDVD system into one dual booting disc.

* This release requires a dual layer DVD-R. It can also be written to partition/USB drive if necessary *

* YOU NEED A MINIMUM OF 1.1GB RAM TO BOOT THE LIVE PART OF THE DISC *

* THE OS X SERVER OPTION ON THE DISC REQUIRES A VALID OS X SERVER SERIAL & LICENSE *

* As a result of compressed DMG, installing OS X might be slower than with the original iPC 10.5.6 Universal ISO Single Layer *

==How To Boot Installer==

To boot the installer just boot the disc as you normally would and it will go right into the Installer. Make sure to read the pop up installation notes before installing!!

== How to Boot LiveDVD ==

To boot the LiveDVD, boot from the iPC Disc, except this time press F8 while booting the disc to get to the Boot Menu. Type in:

config=live.plist

And press Enter to start the LiveDVD Boot. Eventually you will get to the root prompt like this:

:/ root#:

Type in the line “bootlive; exit” (without quotes) like this:

:/ root#: bootlive; exit

And press Enter to start loading the LiveDVD. Now a prompt will come up asking you to specify the RAMDisk Size. A bigger RAMDisk means more room to  use the LiveDVD with, but it uses more RAM. The RAMDisk size cannot exceed your physical RAM size. To use the default 1GB RAMDisk size just leave it blank and press Enter. If you want to specify your own RAMDisk size, it must be specified in 512 byte blocks. To calculate this, say I want a RAMDisk 2048MB in size:

(2048 x 512) / 1000000

Basically the formula is (A x 512) / 1000000 where A is the RAMDisk size in megabytes (A multiplied by 512 divided by 1000000).

If everything goes well you will be greeted with the Mac OS X desktop. Where you can use and test Mac OS X in its fullest. If you go to the Applications folder you see the default OS X apps but go into the “iPC_OSx86_Live_Apps” folder inside the Applications folder and a number of applications have been included:

* AppleHDAPatcher
* Boomerang Data Recovery
* Carbon Copy Cloner
* Clone X 3 (Demo)
* Clonetool H1
* CPU-X
* DSDT Patcher GUI
* EFIStudio
* iDefrag (Demo)
* iPartition (Demo)
* Kext Helper b7
* Marvin’s AMD Utility
* MKextTool
* MSR Tools
* NVCAP Maker 1.4
* OSx86  Tools
* Pacifist
* PPF-O-Matic
* Seashore
* TextMate (Demo)
* UInstaller (Universal OSx86 Installer)
* Zephyroth Utilities — includes:
- About this Mac Modifier
- AMD Patcher
- AMD Software Update

If you want to run your own apps that are not on the DVD then just put them on a USB stick and plug it in :) Since the iPC LiveDVD relies on the RAMDisk for proper usage, if you check the untitled volume on the desktop you can see how much free space the RAMDisk has left. If you keep running out of free space then increasing the RAMDisk size is recommended if possible.

If you are having issues, try logging out and back in. The root user and pass are ipclive for both. To log in as User1 (admin) in loginwindow just select User1 and use “ipclive” (without quotes) as password, to log in as root choose “Other” from loginwindow and use “root” as username and “ipclive” as password (both without quotes)

Default auto login account is the root account. To log into root choose “Other” at the login window, type in “root” as username and “ipclive” as password. An alternate admin account is also available (you can see it in the login window as “user1″) and the password is also “ipclive”

== Kernel Boot Options ==

This LiveDVD takes advantage of prelinked kernels, combining a kernel and a kext cache together to save loading time. All prelinked kernels on the disc are based on the Voodoo 9.5.0 kernel. Default kernel:

mach_kernel: [prelinked] Default extensions set, vanilla AppleSMBIOS, based on Voodoo 9.5.0

The difference between the prelinked kernels on the disc is all to do with AppleSMBIOS. Some AppleSMBIOS work fine on some systems while they don’t on others. Here are some of the prelinked kernel options available (type the name of the kernel at the boot: prompt to use it e.g. “boot_toh”)

boot_smbios28: [prelinked] Uses AppleSMBIOS-28

boot_smbiosefi: [prelinked] Uses AppleSMBIOSEFI w/ vanilla AppleSMBIOS (Note: this prelinked kernel has a tendency not to work, worth a try)

boot_toh: [prelinked] Uses the old ToH AppleSMBIOS, use this if you have About this Mac crash issues

Note: Switching between these prelinked kernels is only useful if you are using the LiveDVD, these have virtually no effect on the installer

OTHER (NON PRELINKED) KERNELS

vanilla: unmodified 9.5.0 kernel

no_prelink: unmodified 9.5.0 Voodoo kernel

==============================

To install iPC directly from another booted OS X install, just mount the iPC Live ISO. Then mount the “installer.dmg” file by double clicking on it. Then open “Install Mac OS X.app” to start the installation.

iPC OSx86 Install Disc is not responsible for any damage that may occur as a result of using this software!!!!

    The trouble still persists and unfortunely neither typing the “sh /etc/rc.liveboot init 4000000″ for 2 GB RAM instead of “bootlive; exit” it’s useless bringing the same bad result
    I wonder why they really didn’t set on default a 2 GB RAM memory which is the most general encountered and I’m curious if that so if it would passed to the next stage – eventually working
    This seems to be a HUGE mistake because in every way the actually 1 GB RAM default if you leave blank and press ENTER it’s not enough and it requiers just a little bit more memory if i’m not mistaken

    I know that changing a pre-linked kernal will possibly fix this, but when I try to boot into LiveDVD or even the installer, I get a kernal panic asking me to contact the Voodoo dev-team. It also says that it’s a system lock or something like that…

    Sprcs:

    AMD64 Athalon TK-55
    nForce Mobo.

    Exactly the same issue here. Try “bash -x /etc/rc.liveboot init 2000000″ and post the results. I still can’t work out at what point it’s failing. Does anyone have a solution for this?

    I’m installing this on my primary laptop (only have one). So I’m a bit scared of the whole process, I have a few questions like +100 of other people.

    my specs are:

    Intel Core Duo 2 CPU P8600 2.4 GHz
    4 GB RAM
    GeForce 9600M GT [128-bit Memory interface; Dedicated video memory 512 MB]
    Realtek High Definition Sound

    Network adapter/s:
    802.11n Wireless LAN Card
    Realtek RTL8168C(P)

    So my questions are:

    * There is so many nvidia drivers on the screenshot, should I choose NVinject 0.2.1 512MB VRAM?

    * What should I choose as my Ethernet, there is no “perfect” match in the screenshot?

    * What should I choose under *audio drivers*?

    * What *kernel* would be best for me? [I'm trying to run dualboot, if that makes a difference]

    * What chipset drivers?

    * What options should I check under *power management*

    * Should I check all the options under *fixes*?

    + is there anything I have forgot about specs, please tell me, I’ve been trying to get proffesional because I’m so afraid that I’m gonna mess it all up, especially because I want to run dualboot next to Windows 7.

    :)

    HP TC4400 Tablet PC

    Installed IPC X-DL
    Everything works out of the Box excluding Intel PROSet/Wireless 3945 and LAN BCM5753M Ethernet
    I’m using a USB WLAN Netgear WG111v2 for now

    Restart/Shutdown works fine, Sleep doesn’t turn off power so its useless for now.

    Good luck

    Well, LiveBoot is a no go for me. But I just have instaled it on my pendrive. Its working like a charm afeter a bit of research. Le only insue I fouind is when I try to click on “Preferences” on Finder. It acts like the explorer crach on Windows, and than it restarts the Finder itself. Anyone having thist insue?

    I have the exact same problem with Finder myself, I use swedish as the native language but when I try to access the “Preferences” in Finder it crashes just like yours do Louco.
    Is there a workaround/fix for this?

    To anyone getting the error message: /etc/rc.liveboot: line 85: $1: unbound variable
    The problem is caused by a variable that is not set. If you comment this line and also two following lines in etc/rc.liveboot the problem is solved. In order to save the new script you need a writeable filesystem, so create a small ramdisk (e.g. 2000 blocks), save it there and run from the command line.

  14. August 12th, 2009 at 03:52 | #14

    Concerning the “line 85: $1: unbound variable” issue.
    In the rc.liveboot file (rc-liveboot-pcwiz.zip taken from http://www.mediafire.com/?hzgddzdiikz) the line 85 is “devname=$1″.
    RAMDisk mount is an action from the local_mount procedure.

    Same:

    /etc/rc.liveboot: line 85: $1: unbound variable

    tried default [ENTER] and various amounts, 2000000, 4000000, same result.

    is initramfs-tools (mkinitramfs) used to create the Ramdisk?

    there was a reported problem here:
    http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-kernel@lists.debian.org/msg16709.html

    the issue was apparently fixed in initramfs-tools_0.59b.

    if initramfs is used, which version?

    Thank you

    Hi there. I can’t boot with live cd neither with normal setup. I get the errors “Still waiting for root device”, or “AppleNforceATA sata phy reset” or something like that, or “AppleNforceATA found 0″.
    Since I’m trying with the DL version I guess I don’t have to download the iPC OSx86 Final 10.5.6 V1.1 PPF (nForce) patch, it’s supposed to be included in the ISO isn’t it?

    I guess my error have to do with not being able to turn on AHCI on at the BIOS. I have a Nvidia MCP61 chipset inside a Dell Inspiron 531s system. Is it a way that I can ignore that or something like that?

    Hey all,

    I hate to post this, it seems like it’s a pretty common error, but I can’t find a definitive answer.

    I am also receiving the
    /etc/rc.liveboot: line 85: $1: unbound variable
    error.

    The only solution I have seen someone post, was the comment out line 85, 86, and 87 in the rc.liveboot script, save it to a small ramdisk then load the Live DVD from there. But I haven’t figured out how to create a ramdisk.
    I was also thinking the file system might be in the live.dmg and I could edit the script there, but I only have Windows available and haven’t found anything to view or edit the dmg file.

    Any ideas?

    Hi!
    I’ve been lurking for a while as I find this porject most interesting. Not having up to date hardware I have never tried setting this up. However, I just picked up a DELL Studio XPS i7-860 and figured it was time to try it out.

    I wondered if the new DELL was too new before I booted the DVD.

    The Live DVD causes a reboot during loading. Looking at the messages, it get about three or four steps (messges) then goes black and reboots.
    Is my hardware too new? Do you think this CPU is compatible? Thanks.

    This is an awesome compile you guys. For all those thowing out tons of comments, I would recommend try, try, and try again… Around my 7th install I got the right combo and it boots up wonderfully. Its a very delicate balance of the right checkmarks.

    On first boot after install use: -f -v
    On second boot use -v… When it freezes check last couple lines and try different drivers in there. With a little luck you should have a working Mac OS X in no time… well several hours, but you get the point.

    @Dr. PC
    no it’s not. you’ll end up screwing your pc. Go get a mac mini. it’s selling for less than $400 on eBay. you can get lucky and get it even for less. people you see here are losers. and by the way, you cannot update. you’ll be stuck fetching patches and kexts all over the net, begging other nerds to help you out.. wasting tons of hours trying to figure out what terms like kext and verbose and pacifist and bootloader actually mean. you’ll end up running in circles and getting lost.
