I still got that nasty “still waiting” after installation on my Dell Dimension 5000.

Or, to be more precise: As long as I omit the -f during the boot, the system comes up, but “About this Mac” crashes If I decide to install the AppleSMBIOS ToH Patch, “About this Mac” reports a Core Solo (which it isn’t, as it’s a Pentium 4), but the System Profiler crashes. Even with NVinject 256 Quartz hardware acceleration seems to be off. However, I’ve got acceptable HD performance.

I can reboot – only until I force the system to -f or until I use OSX86Tools to rebuild the extensions cache ‘n stuff. After that, the system stays stuck indefinitely at the”still waiting for root”. I’ve tried the regular ICHx chipset driver, the alternative LegacyAppleIntelPIIXATA, even Intel ICH10 – no go.

… I’ve got running iDeneb 10.5.5 flawlessly with Quartz Extreme, looks & feels exactly like a true Mac. However, using the usual instructions to install the 10.5.6 update (instead of re-installing the entire system with iPC) leads to exactly the same mess.

I guess this D500 works much more stable with 10.5.5. :( *sigh* I also guess I’ll have to get my wife a true MacMini for her next birthday and put XP back on the Dell as it was designed for. It’s such a shame! :)

Thanks pcwiz! I was able to install iPC only after updating my BIOS but now it works swell! Got nvidia graphics using NVKush, and audio using AppleAzaliaAudio.kext, and both cores working!

Also look here for the trouble i went through initially: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=150053

Using iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Universal PPF5 (Final).iso burned to disc at 4x speed.

After several reboots, changing bios settings (disable legacy usb, disable SATA controller) I still get

    “Still waiting for root device”

Have done a fair bit of research into this but still no joy.
I have made the IDE HD Master and DVDRW Slave, still the same.

Somebody please HELP! All suggestions given serious consideration.

Disabled SATA in BIOS to force only onboard IDE drives (80gb HD and DVD)

    Current system:

Gigabyte MA-790X-DS4 – Award BIOS updated to rev F6 in order to support Phenom II – AMD 790X Chipset, ATI SB600, ITE IT8718 LPCIO
    AMD Phenom II 940 (Quad) @3.0Ghz – SSE 1,2,3 & SSE4A
    8Gb OCZ Reaper HPC DDR2 800Mhz (4×2Gb @ 4-4-4-15) – unganged

    SATA RAID 0 – 2x WD 320Gb – Stripe 0 – Windows Vista Ultimate x64 SP1
    SATA JBOD – 2x WD 500Gb – Storage only
    An old Promise TX133 Ultra PCI running 1x IDE 160Gb & 1x IDE 120Gb – Storage

IDE Maxtor 80Gb set as slave – reserved for Mac OS experiments
IDE HL-DT-ST DVD RAM set as master

Success on a Dell Precision Workstation 690 (following grief with both iDeneb and Kalyway), dual booting Windows XP.

I don’t use the integrated SAS 1068 controller, because when I did get that working (with Kalyway) by adding string pc1000, 54 to AppleLSIFusionMPT, it only worked to the extent of recognising the disks provided they weren’t set up as a RAID array (IM). Given this limitation, the SAS 1068 controller provides no benefit over the vanilla SATA controller, so I connected the drives to that (another benefit is that you don’t need to download extra drivers from Dell in order to install XP).

iPC 10.5.6 and Intel DP35DP mobo.. Getting the AppleVIAATA: VIA UNKNOWN error in DVD load, cant even reach the install… When using default mode (not -V), it just hangs at the beachball load screen of install..
Got exactly same error when using iDeneb 10.5.6

On previous line of errors, it says something about like, “Bus blocked device” too…

I’m trying to install IPC on a Dell PRecision 690 as well. However it doesn’t see the hard drives. I didin’t completely understand your post. Can you explain what was needed to do to get the OS X installer to see the internal hard drive(s)?

    Thanks

    @marshun
Hi, all problems related to: Still waiting for root device are caused by ATA DVD drive. I was trying to load some ATA kext’s without any success. Then in desperation I bought DVD on sata and iPC ver5 worked as harm, instantly. The only problem I’ve got now is low resolution on Radeon x1250.
    My rig is:
Asus M2A-VM, Athlon X2 4400+, Seagete SATA disk, LG SATA DVD writer.
