[Release] Leopard for VMware Virtual Machine Print E-mail

Description:

Pre prepared Leopard virtual machine for VMware Workstation 6, VMware Fusion, VMware Server (requires a tweak to work) and VMware Player. No configuration necessary, working out of the boxl. Please buy a Leopard license before using this. This is strictly for educational purposes to show that it can be done on a virtual machine.

SUPPORT APPLE: Buy a license for Leopard if you are going to use this!

EDUCATIONAL ONLY:  This is for educational purposes ONLY. Not to be used in a productive or commercial environment.

NOTE: When this virtual machine is booting, if there is like a no smoking sign sort of thing (cross) over the Apple logo when booting, don't worry about it, its normal

VMware Server Note: To use this with VMware Server you need to do a minor tweak to the config file. Otherwise it gives you an error that it was created on a version of VMware with more features. Instructions for the tweak are at the bottom.

  • Intel or AMD processor that supports SSE3 (Intel SSE3 works out of the box, but AMD SSE3 needs patching before it will work. Read at the bottom for patching instructions for AMD)
  • This has now been confirmed working on VMware Fusion as well!
  • It is possible to get this to work with SSE2 but you have to do that yourself
  • This release is Leopard Flat Image + 10.5.2 Update + netkas 9.2.0 SpeedStep kernel + mac.nub SMBIOS with the necessary VMware tweaks
  • It comes in a ready to go directory that contains everything you need to boot and use it in VMware, just navigate to the config file and open it as a vitual machine in VMware
  • By default RAM is set to 1GB, adjust this if necessary
  • Ethernet does work with a little bit of simple configuration. It wasn't autoconfigured in this release so use the easy instructions at the bottom to get Ethernet working
  • USB does not work, which is not a surprise seeing as it didn't work in Tiger on VMware either
  • Sound works partially, but its laggy and not practical at all
  • The default username is pcwiz and the admin password is pcwiz
  • Time Machine fix is not applied and Time Machine is not configured. I didn't think Time Machine is practical considering you can make VM snapshots in VMware, but if you want to use it apply the Time Machine fix from here (download it, put it into an ISO and mount) and configure another virtual hard drive and format it with Disk Utility and configure Time Machine to use the new disk
  • There is 8.3 of free space left on the disk for your use (add another virtual disk if you need more space)
  • The virtual CD-ROM is not configured to Connect at Power On because it slows boot. Once you are booted into Leopard, connect the virtual CD-ROM by right clicking the CD icon on the bottom right of the VMware window and clicking Connect. Use the Edit option in that same menu to configure drive and ISO settings
  • No QE/CI at the moment

Where to get it?

This is basically a preprepped virtual machine that can boot right out of the box, Leopard with no configuration or installation. Use Google keywords "site:mediafire.com ?szghzuwiyix leo4vmware" to locate a ZIP which contains a text file with links to download all RAR files. If you want to download all the same parts at the same time, use Google keyword "~pcwiz's VMware Leopard Image". If you prefer to learn and do all the configuration and everything by yourself, there is a guide for this available here .

How to use it?

This is not just a VMware disk image, it contains the configuration files and everything you need to boot it right out of the box. Once you have unzipped the final product, it is a folder called Mac OS X Leopard. Go into VMware and open an existing virtual machine and go into the unzipped Mac OS X Leopard folder and select the FreeBSD 64 bit config file.

PLEASE DO NOT SHARE OR POST THESE LINKS IN PUBLIC!

VMware Server Tweak

  • You must do this to make it work with VMware Server (tested with 1.0.5)
  • Open the Mac OS X Leopard folder and find the FreeBSD-64bit.vmx file
  • Open the file with Notepad or another basic text editor
  • Find the line where it says virtualHW.version = "6"
  • Change the "6" to "3" so it reads virtualHW.version = "3"
  • Save the file and open the virtual machine!
  • If it still gives you the error that it was created on a version of VMware with more features then do this
  • Open the config file again and change the virtualHW.version line to 4 so that it reads virtualHW.version = "4
  • Save it and try again."

Patching for AMD SSE3

  • You only need to do this if you have an AMD SSE3 processor (Intel works out of the box)
  • Firstly, you need to have a working Tiger VM (instructions here)
  • Mount the leopard.vmdk file from this package as a virtual disk in the Tiger VM
  • Boot the Tiger VM and you should have access to the Leopard drive
  • Download Marvin's AMD Utility here
  • Run it from the Tiger VM, for the "Volume/Directory to patch" choose your Leopard volume
  • Choose the "Patch all binaries" radio button and Patch
  • It will take a long time, but eventually it will be done
  • You should now be able to boot the Leopard VM properly
  • If it doesn't work, tap F8 while the Leopard VM is booting to get to the boot: prompt and type in -v and hit Enter.

Ethernet How-To

  • To get Ethernet working in Leopard on VMWare follow these instructions (its easy)
  • Back at the VM home screen, go to VM menu >> Settings
  • Click Add and from the dialog that comes up, choose Ethernet Adapter and click Next
  • Make sure Bridged is chosen and the Connect at power on box is checked and click Finish
  • Boot into your Leopard VM and go to System Preferences (in the Dock)
  • Click on the Network preference pane
  • It will say that a new interface (en0) has been detected, choose the Ethernet Adapter from the left pane
  • Assuming that your internet is auto configuring DHCP, just click the Apply button.
  • Even if it says Cable disconnected or not connected, ignore it, Ethernet will still work
  • It will pull up all your DNS info and everything automatically, close System Preferences
  • You should be able to use Apple Software Update and go on the net fine!

Ethernet Method 2

  • If it still doesn't work, here's another method to do it (make sure that you have an Ethernet adapter configured as Bridged and that you have rebooted the virtual machine after adding the adapter)
  • Go back to System Preferences and open the Network preferences again
  • Click on Ethernet from the left pane and at the bottom click the Assist Me button
  • In the resulting dialog box click the Assistant button
  • The Network Setup Assistant will start up, give the Location a name and click Continue
  • Choose the "I use a cable modem to connect to the Internet" option
  • Click Continue again, and then it will take a moment and tell you that you can't connect automatically and to enter some details
  • Without entering any details click Continue and click OK at the dialog box (this sort of "activates" the Ethernet)
  • Now click the Go Back button twice to get to the screen to choose a connection option
  • This time choose "I connect to my local area network (LAN)"
  • At the Ready to Connect screen click Continue and now it will give you a confirmation that you are connected
  • Click Done or whatever button and close System Preferences, Internet should be working

How to increase screen resolution

  • Because there are no video drivers for it, you can't just configure screen resolution from System Preferences but there is a manual way
  • Go here for instructions on how to do it manually.

Using Apple Software Update

  • You can use Apple Software Update to update Mac OS X (if you have a working Ethernet connection)
  • Before updating anything, take a snapshot of the virtual machine just in case something goes wrong
  • To do this, while your virtual machine is running, go to the VM menu >> Snapshot >> Take Snapshot
  • To open Software Update, go to the Apple menu and click Software update, it will scan for updates and it will list them
  • As of now, pretty much any update is OK, except the Time Machine update. DO NOT apply the Time Machine update (it installs a new kernel that will possibly mess up your install)
  • If anything goes wrong after an update, just restore your Snapshot (VM menu >> Snapshot >> Revert to snapshot)

Troubleshooting

  • If this VM doesn't boot properly or if it hangs at the Apple logo, the first step in troubleshooting is to find your errors. Right at the vmware splash screen, click inside the window and tap F8 as fast as you can. You eventually get to a boot: prompt. At the prompt enter -v and hit Enter, watch the messages and post up your errors or where it halts!
  • The next thing to do is to try an older kernel. Tap F8 to get to the boot: prompt again and type in mach_kernel.toh and hit Enter. See if this kernel boots the system properly.

Unfortunately the free download site only allows one download at a time, does not support resuming, sometimes breaks in the middle of downloading, and is not very fast at less than 100kB/s. I am estimating that it will take several days to complete this download as I cannot stay at the computer all day. Maybe one of the fans who has the means to download this faster can set up an alternate method of distribution?

Brilliant

TechnOmage -
Since you claim to be a mage, you might like to consider note that

a) 36x98M files at 100KB/s = 10 hours
b) I paid the extra 6 [$12] and got 350KB/s on a single threaded download and with several files going at once got the whole thing in a an hour and a half.
c) I've rarely seen speed like that from a torrent (possibly never)

I would suggest some MD5 checksums.

But Thanks a million. That is a big step forward.

Thats kind of weird. If you downloaded the individual parts (all separate links) it should be part 001 002 003 and so on. Try unzipping the first 001 RAR file and see if everything else unzips itself.

If it doesn't try renaming them like you said.

Everything is working fine on my Dell laptop. Even sound. The 'exclusive mode' in Vmware is funny. I'm the proud owner of a Macbook now :cheer:

I tried some different settings for the ethernet: no luck... And that makes the virtual machine quite useless for me personally. I would love to read a solution for this problem from somebody.

Wow, those Ethernet instructions weren't there the last time I checked

I tried something similar allready, but after that, I experimented with Maxxuss. So I guess, maybe I damaged the installation by doing that.

I'm gonna try now with a fresh Virtual Machine.

Yeah I added those instructions minutes ago. I don't think you can damage a VM by adding a Maxxuss kext but I guess you should start off with a fresh one anyway smilies/smiley.gif

The Ethernet instructions didn't work for me at first.

I set VMware to bridged, booted and set OS to on DHCP - nothing.

I rebooted - still nothing

I rebooted with VMware set to host only - nothing.

I changed OS to manual and set some appropriate values - nothing.

I changed OS BACK to DHCP and now networking works fine with VMware on host only and OS on DHCP.

ifconfig was totally unhelpful through all this - and rebooting was very slow (like network timeout slow) while this was going on.

I think that there is just something not initialising properly.

It works for most, I can guarantee that. Rebooting is always pretty slow, it took around 5 minutes for me and this was on a quad core Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor :s

Might have something to do with your current net connection.

Hmmm, the Ethernet instructions don't work for me. I tried what sleepy did and I noticed that I got an ip address after switching back from manual to DHCP. But that gave me no internet connection. I guess that is related to the fact that I haven't got Internet Connection Sharing enabled on my Vista host.

My net connection isn't weird at all I think. I can run Win XP, Ubuntu, OS X Tiger flawlessly in VMWare with ethernet...

Apart from that, I used this screen resolution, which works fine for my display:

5 minutes with a Q6600!

My system is booting to a usable system (background activity still going on but a ready screen display, arrow cursor etc) in just under 2 minutes 30 on a 32 bit 2.16 GHz notebook, off the internal notebook drive hosted by XP sp2. I wondered why you were making such a point about the system not being fast. Mine is quite usable at this speed.

However, the network behaviour is consistent as described i.e. I have to boot the system then swap from DHCP to manual and then back to DHCP before I can use the network.

Also I can only get Host Only to work, not bridged. Which is fine in practice as host only is all I need.

I've posted patching instructions for AMD SSE3 and I've also added another method for getting Ethernet working. Try the Method 2 mentioned in the top article sleep.

Yeah it might be usable but its not too practical. Mine isn't exactly what you'd call usable, I have a Q6600. Its about the speed of a (really) slow G3. I guess it might be because I've used OS X natively on this same PC and its much faster.

I'll research a bit on what the patch is to get it to work with SSE2. For now, try the patching for AMD SSE3 and see if it works with AMD SSE2 as well.

For Ethernet configuration you need a a version of VMware Workstation, VMware Fusion, or VMware Server (not tested yet).

Ethernet still giving issues
Awesome job setting up this VM -

I am still having issues with the ethernet though -

I am running this on a Dell D620. VM boots up just fine, but when I go to the network settings the error that I am consistently getting is that the ethernet cable is unplugged.

- Ethernet Bridged

- Tried attaching to both my ethernet card and wireless without luck for both

- Tried both Ethernet scenarios.

I also tried the manual to dhcp switch, but still get the "ethernet cable is unplugged" notice.

Any other help would be appreciated - thanks again!

I am also having troubles with networking. And it's really slow in a Q6600, almost unusable. I wish 2 CPUs would work, but it gives me a stack error.

I tried both methods, but neither works.

ksong12,

I actually didn't upload it, NCSXP2005 (from InsanelyMac) did. It says 0 seeds but there actually are quite a few seeds, I'm getting top DL speeds.

xxSlideRulexx

For me it said cable unplugged but Ethernet still worked fine. Disable all firewalls on your system and try.

ksong12 (again),

I tested it with 2 CPUs on a Q6600 and no stack errors. It doesn't really matter though since 2 CPUs does not seem to yield any visible speed increase.

Speed is what I am working on right now.

nrg,

You could always just get this premade VM if the guide doesn't work for you. Leave it for up to an hour, it takes a long time.

Trovadorz,

I have the entire thing, since I made the image, but how do I seed it with uTorrent? I tried making a VMware Image folder like in the torrent and sticking the parts inside it but it doesn't work.

ksong12,

Yeah I just chose 2 processors. Also, I'm using VMware Workstation 6.0.0 build 45731 if that helps.

xxSlideRulexx,

Not really sure what to recommend at this point. Maybe try unzipping a fresh VM from the part files and try the steps again.

For those whose Ethernet doesn
Hang on there. For some Ethernet still doesn't work, I also will mention that once you set your settings and reboot, the configuration will be gone so you have to reset it again.

Meanwhile I recommend you:

- Turn off ALL hardware and software routers temporarily
- Try both ethernet methods multiple times
- Make sure you restart the VM after adding ANY ethernet devices or after changing the ethernet mode
- Try all the ethernet modes, restarting the VM after changing each one

You need VMware Workstation (commercial) or VMware Server (free) to set up Ethernet. VMware Server is free so you can use that.

Try going to the F8 boot menu and typing in:

mach_kernel.toh

And hit enter. See if Xcode now works.

You have 2 options. One is to use VMware Player or VMware Workstation and the other option is to make a new virtual machine in VMware Server and set it to use the leopard.vmdk file in the package.

qemu-img convert leopard.vmdk Leopard.img

So 2 questions:
1. How long does such a convertion take?
2. how do i use that new file for an physical install?
Do i have to mount the new img file and copy all files in it on a new partition? Sorry, in that things im new smilies/smiley.gif

best regards...

Here are the instructions:

* First of all, create a new directory in the ROOT of your C: drive called "leo". This is where all our files will go.

* Put the leopard.vmdk file from this package into that leo folder in the root of the C drive

* Download the qemu-img.zip patched file (here: http://www.mediafire.com/?2t9sjnylu2i) and unzip the qemu-img.exe file in the archive into the leo folder

* Open a new command prompt in Windows. Execute the following commands:

cd C:/leo
qemu-img convert -O img leopard.vmdk leopard.img

* That last command will create a leopard.img file in your leo folder. It will take a long time. You will know whem the command is finished when it returns to the "C:/leo>" command prompt.

I hope this helps smilies/cheesy.gif

Hi pcwiz

Tried making a new VM and used leopard.vmdk. At least it starts booting up now, but freezes with error "calibration failed with 2 attempts".
My guess is something in the BIOS so I'll go back and see if I can fix it.

Thanx

Yeah, you need something with at least 17GB of free space. You could grab a cheap external hard drive or internal one, they're not too expensive.

Thats one of the limitations of using a premade image, if you want to install natively onto a partition then get an installer DVD, you can install to a partition with those.

OK, first go to your Start menu and in the search box (you have Vista right?) enter:

Computer Management

Click the link that comes up. Accept the UAC warnings. On the left panel click on Disk Management and let it load. From the disk chart, there will be disks labeled like Disk 0 and Disk 1.

Find the spare hard drive you wanted to install OS X onto and check the Disk number (e.g. Disk 1). Tell me what the number is.

I have Vista in german, so sometimes it's quite difficult to f ind the things you want me to find, but the only disadvantage is that it takes more time smilies/smiley.gif

Another question:
Is it possible to make a seperat partition after i've installed OS X on it? are there complications with the format?

I have a problem with Network. Neither of two methods do not work, installing Maxxuss AMDnet patch does not work either.

The problem can be ifconfig says en0 interface has MAC address 00:00:00:00... (all zeros)

Changing ethernet MAC type in .vmx file from "generated" to static" does not help either.

The host OS is Kubuntu 7.10

I also want to confirm with gerix76 about how the ethernet device shows up with mac address of 00:00:00:00:00 in the OS even though in the vmx file, it is clearly something different. This usually means the hardware is failing to talk with the OS.

I've been reading over the ethernet problems everyone is having, but I think I have a different problem. I was following the steps in method 1 and when I got to the step that says:
"It will say that a new interface (en0) has been detected, choose the Ethernet Adapter from the left pane", I never get the message that an ethernet adapter has been found. I only have firewire in the list. My Ethernet shows up as connected in vmware player at the top though and it shows set as NAT. If I click the plus sign to add an interface though, all I get are: VPN, PPPoE, and 6 to 4. Is there any way to get the ethernet card to show up to osX?

Many thanks!

Legioner,

OK back up all important data and wipe the Disk 1 clean and make it so that there is only 1 partition, formatted as FAT32.

All who are having troubles with Ethernet,

This may sound really obvious but cycle through the modes, Bridged, NAT, Host-only, etc. and see if one works. Keep in mind that after changing any settings you must restart OS X Leopard to see any changes.

Then follow Ethernet methods 1 and 2. It really seems like a hit and miss for Ethernet right now.

Just to shed some light in the network/Ethernet situations.
Host-Only (vmnet1) and NAT (vmnetsmilies/cool.gif work perfectly. I do the methods 1 and 2, reboot, and it picks up the IP address no problem over DHCP. I can ping my host computer from OS X.

But Bridged (vmnet0) does not work no matter what I try. I made sure VMWare Bridge Protocol is installed and enabled on Local Area Connection.

So you must have a seperate hard disk to install this image and make it run natively, or just a partition with enough space? I've got it (10.5) running in VMware with internet working just fine though it's a little slow. Reason I was asking is because regardless of what install dvd I use for a native installation gives me "waiting for root device" or a multimedia failure and I know it's not the DVD because I've burned them with every program possible at the slowest speeds.

Could I follow the method you have linked on your vmware tiger page to go from VMware to native (on insanelymac) and using easybcd for the boot options? I have have AMD (SSE3) and the leopard file has already been patched with Marvin's AMD utility.

"Unable to add virtual machine "/data/vmware/Virtual Machines/Mac OS X Leopard/FreeBSD 64-bit.vmx" to the inventory: Configuration file was created by a VMware product with more features than this version"

The solution was to open the .vmx file and change.
virtualHW.version = "8"
to:
virtualHW.version = "4"

Then it was able to boot. However, my machine being AMD, it didn't boot past the Apple logo. Is there a pre-patched version I can download?

Legioner,

OK First back up all data and make sure that your drive is connected, and formatted as FAT32 with one partition. Verify that it is listed as Disk 1, and download dd.exe from here:

ftp://ftp.uu.net/vendor/sun/solaris/x86/dd.exe

Put dd.exe in the c:/leo folder where your leopard.img file should be as well. Now, on Vista go to the Start menu and type in Command prompt (or find it manually), right click it and select Run as administrator (without administrator it won't work). Then enter the following commands (2 commands, after dd it is all one line):

cd c:/leo
dd if=leopard.img of=?DeviceHarddisk1Partition0 bs=5M --progress

Wait for it to complete and don't do anything else while its going. Once its done, reboot your computer and set it to boot from the hard drive you installed to. Pray and hope everything goes well! Remember BACK UP FIRST!!

GnatGoSplat,

I'm sorry, I only have Intel so I didn't patch it for AMD. As mentioned there are instructions for making a Tiger VM here:

http://pcwizcomputer.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=36&Itemid=45

There is also a torrent on TPB called "VMware OS X 10.4.7" smilies/wink.gif

seth,

Yes if it works for Legioner then I will make a guide smilies/smiley.gif

dreamermd,

Glad it works smilies/wink.gif For Ethernet try ethernet methods 1 and 2 posted in the article and also try switching between the different Ethernet modes (bridged, nat, host only, etc.) Remember to restart the Leopard VM every time you change Ethernet settings!

Rodney,

Try booting OS X in verbose mode. Right at the vmware splash screen click inside the window and start tapping F8 fast, eventually you get to a boot: prompt. Type in -v and hit Enter, record the messages where it stops.

beckend,

Have you patched it for AMD SSE3 yet? It won't work without patching

tangstr,

As with the advice for Rodney, get to the F8 boot: prompt, type in -v -x and hit Enter and try.

whois,

Same thing I said for tangstr, type in -v -x at the F8 boot prompt, hit Enter and see if it works.

Maggie,

Yes that does seem to be a problem for many, try using an older version of Xcode.

kodevoder,

Does it get to the Apple screen with the spinning wheel? As long as the wheel is still spinning leave it for 30-40 minutes and see if anything happens.

Mo,

No this does not need a 64 bit computer however it does need SSE3. This would work fine with your C2D laptop, but not your P4 desktop.

What a challenge it has been trying to get this thing patched for AMD!!!
Ok, I downloaded "VMware OS X 10.4.7"... turns out it's not AMD compatible either!
So I downloaded a VMware OS X 10.4.1, also known as the "deadmoo" image. It boots... but very, very slowly (takes 10-minutes or longer on an AMD X2 4400 w/4GB RAM).
Then I realized I need to get that AMD patch program into it and I don't know how. I don't know any way to read my NTFS hard drive from OS X.
So I get the bright idea, I'll enable a network adapter and download that patch via Safari. After enabling the network adapter, 45-minutes later it STILL hadn't finished booting (stuck at the blue desktop background with the spinning color wheel and magnifying glass on the upper right corner). So I guess the deadmoo image doesn't like the network adapter.
Any ideas on how to get that patch program into Tiger without using a network connection?

My Ethernet works but only for the time I'm using the VM. However when I reboot it, my Ethernet settings are gone and I have to wait until it picks 'em back up again. How can I make sure the settings are set so I don't have to reset it every time?

my config : AMD based system ( Processor : AMD Athlon 64 X2 BE-2300, Dual Core, Socket AM2, 1.9 GHz, HT 1GHz, 64 64 512 kB cache . Motherboard : NVidia chipset, NF-MCP61 . Memory : Physical 2GB DDR2, Dual Channel, 382MHz, 900MB for VM, Hard-Drive : Physical SATA 320GB, Bus Speed forced full/3Gbps, 16MByte Cache, Host on C:/NTFS partition, Guest on E:/NTFS partition, F:/FAT . DVD ROM drive ATA D: . Host OS : Win XP SP2 : was tweaked for faster speed, no-unnecessary services or program in background . VMWare : Workstation v6.0.3.8004 ) .
booting takes about 3 to 5 minutes .
ethernet (bridge-mode) still not working , so working on that now .

This is how i followed your instruction and further to install it :
(basically copy-pasting instruction from your (pcwiz) site, and dmnd ).
AMD SSE3 system (check with the cpu-z tool (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php) to see if your amd processor have SSE3 or not) .
To use this torrent image on AMD based system, we need (Mac OS X) Tiger Img installed insie a VM, first . According to pcwiz (actual instruction for tiger is here http://pcwizcomputer.com/index...&Itemid=45), get VMWare v6.0 build 45731 (from here [link removed] or from vmware site, ky from here [link removed]).

Get the "JaS Mac OS X 10.4.8 Intel/AMD SSE2 SSE3 PPF1 PPF2" ISO img (get it from here [link removed]) . burn on dvd . place the dvd in ur dvd drive .
Install & configure VMWr (typical mode . guest-ossmilies/shocked.gifther . versionsmilies/shocked.gifther . network-type:host-only . allocate-disk-spc:6gb . goto VM-Settings . follow instruction at link above . edit "other.vmx" config file, add the special config lines, you must see pcwiz's tiger post . config vmwr bios, click on screen quickly, press F2 right after that very quickly also, to go into bios, disable serial, parallel, floppy, cache . in vmwr, reboot.
Mac Tiger OS install process will start from dvd, after couple of try . after install process started successfully, and you're inside the mac setup installation page . run "disk utility", to create partition, by clicking on empty space area first, then click on main menu's "go" - "Utility" - "DiskUtility.app" . choose ur vmwr hard-drive . make partition . close disk utility . click "continue" on setup program, unselect unnecessary drivers . choose the patch for AMD . wait for instal to complete, takes about 25 to 45 minutes . vmwr will restart . MacOSX Tiger will be bootable now, inside vmwr .
On next boot, type in registration info with sometype of made-up (or whatever) screen name, address name, etc, create username, password . during boot if u get kernel stack err, ignore it, click ok .
reboot tiger vm . stop the vm.

Double click on the CD-ROM and uncheck the "Connect at power on" checkbox option.
Goto VM - Settings menu, remove Floppy Drive (and USB Controller) .
Turn off (and close) all VM.
Open the "Free BSD 64-bit.vmx" with notepad . find the line starts with "virtualHW.version", change value from 6, into 4 . add (bios.bootDelay = "5000") without the first braces symbols, in one line, as first line in config file . add (paevm = "true") at the end . add (numvcpus = "1") at the end . save config file, close notepad .
Run this "Mac OS X Leopard" new VM, and click on the black screen very quickly, and press F2 also very quickly right after that, to go inside the Bios . in main Bios screen, choose the Legacy Diskette A and set it to Disabled . goto Advanced - I/O Device Configuration, disable all Parallel, Floppy, and Serial controllers . press F10 to save changes and reboot.
After that, you should be able to boot the Leopard VM . if it doesn't work, press F8 while the Leopard VM is booting, to get to the "boot:" prompt, and type in -v and hit Enter . it may take from 15 to 30 minutes first time to finalize the initial configuration, when you're in desktop, change time, timezone, start usin.
Next time, booting may take 3 to 6 minutes.
You should also make a clone copy of this VM, after successful completion, or when u made any major changes inside Leoprad, so you can go back to previous state if some fatal error occurs.
Print the pcwiz's original instruction pages, becomes very helpful if u come across a trouble/error .

GnatGoSplat, speakerscream, and Andoras,

I know its hard to patch it for AMD, it should be relatively easy to get a 10.4.8 VM up and running using an ISO image. I didn't know that the 10.4.7 image was not AMD compatible, I assumed that like JaS's 10.4.8 release, 10.4.7 was also universal.

I've already tried to mount it and change the files, but it won't mount properly. Its the only way to do it I'm sorry to say.

Bry8Star,

Thanks for the posted Tiger VM instructions. I have removed the links to the torrents however, because we don't really want that kind of stuff here. We are trying to encourage supporting software developers as much as possible.

Ethernet in bridge mode , Trying to change the physical MAC (media access control) address , I've tried the below command :
sudo ifconfig en0 lladdr 00:50:56:3e:47:08
... inside the utility - Terminal.app .
even tried below command :
sudo ifconfig en0 ether 00:50:56:3e:47:08
... didn't work.
also tried after adding following 2 lines in "FreeBSD 64-bit.vmx" config file for this leopard.vmdk :
ethernet0.addressType = "static"
ethernet0.address = "00:50:56:3E:47:07"
... and removed below 3 lines :
ethernet0.addressType = "generated"
ethernet0.generatedAddress = "00:50:56:2f:47:07"
ethernet0.generatedAddressOffset = "0"
... VM wasn't booting, and fount out that config file was changed automaticlly ! to a different MAC address . So i had to remove the ethernet adapter and add another ethernet adapter as same name "ethernet0", and re-enter all those lines back, then VMware wasn't changing it automatically, at least . but now the Leopard VM is not booting at all , spinin for ever ! :-(

anyone knows of a tool for Apple-mac's MAC hex address changing or spoofing ? something that can change MAC after complete booting, and don't require to re-boot to browse/find other net components or configuration ? Thanks.

Hi there,

for those who have problem to get network working, here are workaround using Proxy :

- Setup VMware to use Host only networking (see previous post to get that work)
- Download and install Proxy from http://www.proxyplus.cz/
- Add IP address of Leopard which DHCP assign into Proxy configuration (Proxy web interface -> Security -> Secure Clients) and restart Proxy
- Open Network in Leopard for en0, click Advanced -> Proxies
- Check protocol "Web Proxy (HTTP)" and type into "Web Proxy Server" IP of Your host (need to be in same subnet as Leopard) and type default port 4480
- Apply all changes
- Try opening some Internet address ... and wholaaa it work!

Those solution is not perfect but at least can surf the Internet or run software update. For other services (HTTPS, FTP ...) need to additionally configure Proxy

Here are overview of my setting:
- Cable unplugged still shown
- Configure Using DHCP
- IP Address: 192.168.10.128
- Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
- Router: none
- DNS Server: 192.168.10.1
- Host IP Address: 192.168.10.1

OSXNoob and whizzlestick,

Try using VMware Player (free) rather than VMware Server. There have been known problems with VMware Server.

danet,

Try updating to VMware Workstation 6.0.3. Another person had the same problem and that fixed it. Also try booting with mach_kernel.toh -v at the F8 boot prompt as it says under Troubleshooting in these release notes.

Apr 29 12:32:02 leowiz /System/Library/CoreServices/coreservicesd[44]: SFLSharePointEntry::CreateDSRecord: dsCreateRecordAndOpen(PCWiz Computer's Public Folder) returned -14135

When running with the mach_kernel.toh option, it still get stuck, on the same line...

I must say that on the first time i tried to run it - it worked!! but after rebooting the vm - it stopped working...
I even tried to delete this vm and unrared it again, but it still doesn't work...

all my hardware and vmware should be ok (because it once run)....
but anyway i'm using vmware workstation 6.0.3.80004 and intel core2duo with sse3...

Hi all, same problem here:

Apr 29 12:32:02 leowiz /System/Library/CoreServices/coreservicesd[44]: SFLSharePointEntry::CreateDSRecord: dsCreateRecordAndOpen(PCWiz Computer's Public Folder) returned -14135

after this step disk activity stops and "cpu use" is reduced near to 0%, waiting 1 our doesn't change the state, i have noticed that sometimes (once) it hangs on a different step but i don't remenber which (sry).

i have tried a lot of combinations of -f -v -s -r -x cpus=1 platform=(acpi|x86pc) switches but i got success only using the single user flag ( -s ) after that typing "exit" it hangs

i have tried: mach_kernel.toh and without -v switch solutions but without success, i'm using Vmware 6.0.3, i have no tried the 6.0.0

I have a Pentium D 920, WindowsXP 32 bit, setting 1 or 2 cpus on vmware machine is useless

i was thinking that if someone can post the files of a "save state" (suspend i mean) of a successfull boot of the vmware machine (clean install), and test it on my configuration, that would be nice, sry for my poor english, thanks all for your time, bye.

Hi all, thanks for answer pcwiz, i have tested the virtual machine on a p4 prescott and it worked on first boot, i have made a snapshot and used on my pc and it works but rebooting it hangs on sone ata error, i have tryed to do the configuration by myself using leopard-x86-flat-img and it boot only the first time, after it hangs on:

osx86s-mac-pro configd[33]: interfaceNamer: No network stack object

I think that this can be usefull for someone:

You can mount the leopard-x86-flat-img disk without doing the conversion to vmdk, you can mount it as a fake drive using this configuration file (copy without start and end lines and save as a .vmdk) and place it on the same folder of the vmware machine and flat image file, after mount it as a normal disk on vmware, but be careful this methot give some problems with snapshots.

Hi,

Thank you for making this image. I'm actually looking to buy an iMac, so I want to play with OSX first. I'm trying to run this on WMWare Workstation 6 but I get some errors.

For ethernet, I get the error "IP Configuration 5.178.228.40 in use by [some mac address], DHCP server 5.0.0.1". I've tried both methods you mentioned and get the same error.

Also, the mouse doesn't seem to follow my mouse. Instead, moving my mouse by a few pixels makes the OsX mouse move half a screen.

Any ideas?

Tim Cooper,

Don't use all caps please smilies/wink.gif You have to open the file called "FreeBSD-64bit.vmx" in VMware.

payanddisplay,

No problem, glad you enjoy it!

Dan,

Like I said to many others here if a part is missing on FileFactory then just grab the missing part from the RAPIDSHARE or TORRENT mirrors.

Hi PCWiz,

Thanks for sharing this fab resource and also very helpful and easy to understand instructions.

It all went fine with me, however once I downloaded the software updates (didn't download the timemachine one) it asked me to restart and since last 3 hours it's still installing software update (states... 'running installer scripts'.

Don't know how to solve this? Any ideas to solve this will be much appreciated.

Nicedude_abad,

Just leave it on overnight. Its expected for updates to take a while on OS X VMware.

Could use another suggestion for networking. I can only get it to work occasionally by setting the mac address to match the address in .vmx and use bridged networking. Neither nat or bridge is reliable through a reboot, though. Looks like osx only occasionaly does something behind the scenes that makes it recognize the network card, and what triggers it to wake up is unknown.

Found something that may help others. Use Safari to surf to a known good web site. I use my router's IP address. You'll see the error message, but keep Safari up and visible. As you execute pcwiz's network fix #2 steps, you'll see Safari suddenly bring up the web site at some point. Stop executing the fix steps at point and go no further. This seems to work reliably in my setup in which I am using Bridged networking, and the machine is attached to a router that has a DHCP and DNS server.

It works great ( a little slow, but that's to be expected in a VM environment ) Downloaded the vm through the torrent worked great. Pulled right up on my Dell Precision m90 laptop (intel core duo) with 3 gb ram. The only problem I had was the ethernet. Did method 1 and then method 2 no go.
Came back to it later and tried again. no go. Edited the vm file and added the ethernet lines. no go. Finally just kept switching the VM Ethernet settings from bridged to NAT. Reboot VM then tried method 2. Still no go. Switched to Custom Specific virtual network with VMnet0 (default Bridged) in dropdown. Rebooted VM. did method 2 and it saw the network and got a DHCP assigned IP address. And I was surfing the net.

Thanks pcwiz. Great job and a cool idea

I was gonna go through the steps to do it, but then I thought, why doesn't he just post the VMWare drive of it and save us the trouble? Then I decided to search the green demon and it was. Save me several hours. smilies/cheesy.gif

It runs slows as hell on my Q6600 Vista 64 box, but it works. Great job!

Greetings All,

Im trying to increase the size of the Vitural Machine (OSX) and i'am currently "freezed" at the resizing of the Partion :

The following is my setup:

Host OS : windows xp sp2
Vmware Workstation : 6.0.3.80004
Installed/Running Virtual machine(s) : 1 (windows vista) & OSX

My objective :

Increase the current size (16Gb) of the OSX virtual disk to 30 Gb as well as resizing the partition so that i can install an application (.dmg file) which i already have on my Host System drive.

What i have so far achieved :

Thru command line interface and usage of vmware-vdiskmanager.exe i expanded the virtual disk capacity from 16Gb to 37Gb.

Can someone please help with indication as how to proceed further ?
How can i access the .dmg file located on my Xp drive while in the Guest OSX.

In advance thank you for your imput.

Hi,

I've finished downloading the torrent, and figured out how to extract everything correctly with WinRAR. The first time I started the image, I got a message about my computer not being 64-bit. That was fine (and true, since I'm just running a 32-bit host system). I changed the guest OS setting to FreeBSD. Leopard wouldn't load. I renamed the files to remove the 64-bit part. I tried the -v and mach_kernel.toh troubleshooting tips as suggested above, but Leopard still wouldn't load. I basically got the same last line as OSXNoob above (http://i280.photobucket.com/al...XError.jpg), but with the following two added lines:

"Extension "com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform" has immediate dependencies on both com.apple.kernel and com.apple.kpi components; use only one style."
"ACPI: Button driver prevents system sleep" line after that."

I've left the screen on for over 15-20 minutes, to no avail.

My host OS is Vista. My Core 2 Duo processor uses SSE3. All other specs are fine.

I've deleted the whole appliance package, and copied an untouched (other than the virtualHW change suggested) Leopard appliance over. I changed the guest OS to be "FreeBSD" and opted to create a new UUID, which VMware Server prompted me. I've tried both VMware Server and Player.

Leopard still hangs at the gray boot screen, with the centered Apple logo. I've let it run for over an hour. This is the screen I have: http://img101.imageshack.us/im...osesr6.png Can you suggest anything?

Thanks in advance.

I got Ethernet to work!

1. Add Ether Card, set it custom, connected to VMnet0 bridged
2. In Edit/Virtual Net Setting, set VMNet0 bridged to your host Ether Card.
3. Do the Step 1 and 2 as shown by PCWIZ.
4. Work!

First of all let me congratulate Pcwiz for the great work.

The VMware image is running fine on a VMware Workstation 6.0.4 build-93057. My hardware is a T60p laptop with 3Gb of RAM, Intel Duo T2600 and SS2/SS3 capable.

The problem is that I cannot install the 10.5.3 update.

I tried several methods: Apple Software Update, download and install macosx1053update and macosx1053comboupdate manually and even modified update packages as kalyway_10.5.3_ComboUpdate and JaS OsX86 10.5.3 Intel SSE3 Combo Update in combination with workarounds like running a shell script to remove AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext while the update is running.

The result is that I either get a VMware severe error message saying that the cpu has been disabled or the whole Leopard OS locks or in the middle of the
install the display switches to a blue screen and never boots back.

Has anyone been able to install the 10.5.3 update?

Thanks.

Hi
thanks a lot for your great work.
Leopard works fine... except about speed.
Boot is around 4 minutes.. and I must wait 4 seconds when clicking the mouse to get the result.
So my question is what could be tuned or changed in order to get more speed ?
(Compared with a classical installal on an AMD bi processors 2.1 Ghz where I got boot in 15 sec and instant mouse click answer...)

Ok I agree, intall in this case is much more complex than VMWare method.

Thanks
