[Mac OSx86] 10.4.8 VMware Installation Guide Print E-mail

Description:

Try out Mac OS X 10.4.8 for yourself without buying a real mac. Let this guide help you along the way with simple, easy to understand step-by-step instructions and screenshots. Note: This is different from PearPC. PearPC emulates a PowerPC processor, while VMware emulates a direct x86 platform.

Ever wanted to try out the famous Mac OS X operating system for yourself without getting a mac? Now you can, by using the x86 emulation software VMware Workstation (or Server), and to make it better, on a PC running Windows! Read on for more information:
Ever since Apple made the move to Intel processors, hackers have been trying hard to modify the x86 version of OS X to run on a PC. And, of course, they have indeed succeeded in doing it. Various hackers have released hacked ISO torrents that can be installed on PCs. However, this violates the Apple EULA agreement and there are legal issues with using the ISOs. The legal ways to obtain a copy would be:

1) Become an Apple Developer ($500 membership)

2) Buy a real mac, deactivate the copy of OS X and install it on a PC (this way would be pointless because the whole point is to run OS X without getting a mac). This way also somewhat violates the EULA because the agreement says that you can't run OS X on non-Apple hardware.

Its best to get a legal copy of the ISO because then you can install the software without worry about malicious software or about the software phoning home.

With that said, lets begin.

System Requirements:

  • Processor supporting SSE2 or SSE3 instructions (Use CPU-Z for Windows to check)
  • Windows 2000 or higher/Linux (Mandrake, SUSE, or Red Hat)
  • 512MB of RAM (strongly recommended)
  • 6GB minimum hard drive space
  • 8MB of VRAM
  • DVD-RW drive if you are burning the ISO

Software Requirements:

  • VMware Server (Free) or VMware Workstation 5 (commercial, recommended) or higher. VMware 6 is recommended.
  • Note: VMware ACE Editions apparently have problems with networking in Mac OS X.
Attention Vista users: VMware Workstation 5.5 will not work. You need Workstation 6
VMware Workstations 6.0.1 and 6.0.2 are NOT recommended. It is recommended you use Workstation 6.0 build 45731
  • Mac OS x86 ISO; For test purposes ONLY, in this guide the "JaS Mac OS X 10.4.8 Intel/AMD SSE2 SSE3 PPF1+PPF2" ISO will be used. Mac specific DVDs cannot be used.
  • Burning software to burn the ISO to DVD (optional, recommended)
  • Blank 4.7GB DVD+R/DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD+RW disc (if you are burning)
  • Daemon Tools or Virtual Clone Drive (if you are not burning the ISO)

Step 1: Install software

Install all the software that is required. VMware is mandatory. If you are going to burn the ISO file to a DVD (recommended), you will need burning software such as NTI CD/DVD Maker or Nero Burning ROM. If you aren't going to burn the disc, then you will need drive emulation software such as Daemon Tools or Virtual Clone Drive.

Step 2a: Burn the ISO (if you are burning)

Use your favourite burning software to burn the ISO image to DVD. Insert the bruned DVD into your optical drive.

Step 2b: Mount the image (if you are not burning)

Mount the OS x86 DVD ISO file in Daemon Tools or Virtual Clone Drive (You can use Alcohol 120% if you want). You cannot mount the ISO directly in VMware because VMware cannot properly read HFS+ images (thats the format the Mac OS ISO is in)

Step 3: Configure VMware

Note: In this guide, VMware Workstation 6 will be used. VMware Server or Workstation 5 can be used, but Workstation 6 is strongly recommended.

  • Launch VMware
  • On the home page, click "Create new virtual machine" to bring up the dialog below:

Wizard 1

  • Click "Next"

Wizard 2

  •  Make sure "Typical" is chosen and click Next
  • Important Note: If you are installing directly to a physical drive or partition (ignore this tip if you don't know what this is, its an advanced option) choose the Custom option and when you get to the screen that deals with hard drives, set VMware to access a physical partition or disk

Wizard 3

  • Choose Other as the Guest OS and choose Other for the version. Click Next
  • Note: There are several Guest OSes that you can choose for Mac OS X. The best are:

- Other , Other
- Linux , Other Linux
- Other , FreeBSD
- Windows NT (works well if you are getting ACPI errors but make sure your virtual hard drive images are IDE, not SCSI)

Wizard 4

  • Give the machine a name.  Click Next
  • Speed-up tip: Store the virtual machine in a partition or hard disk that is separate from the current partition/hard disk that you are currently using. This will make the virtual machine somewhat faster.

Wizard 5

  •  Click "Use network address translation (NAT)" if you are using a official legal copy of OS x86 or "Use host-only networking" if you are using a hacked ISO image (for test purposes, of course :) to prevent Mac OS X from registering itself during installation

Wizard 6

Choose a disk size (6GB is minimum). If you choose 6GB, you will have 1.5GB of space left after installation for your own programs. Any size is OK as long as you have the hard drive space. Check the "Allocate all disk space now" checkbox (not necessary, but it improves speed). Choose "Split disk into 2GB files" if you are putting the virtual machine on a FAT32 partition. Click Finish and wait till the virtual disk is created.

Home

  • Click VM >> Settings

Unmodified Settings

  • Click on "Floppy" and click Remove (You don't need floppies for OS X)
  • Click on "Memory" and on the right, adjust the memory amount to about half your actual system memory.

CD Settings

  • Click "CD-ROM (IDE 1..." and on the right, select your virtual image drive/physical drive from the drop-down menu. Click OK to return back to Home. Close VMware Workstation or Server.
  • If you wish, you can click "Add" to add a USB Controller (not tested)

Step 4: Edit VMware config file

  • Navigate to the folder where you placed your virtual machine
  • Open the "VMware Configuration File" with Notepad
  • Add the line: paevm="true" to the end of the file
  • Note: For networking in 10.4.8, add the line ethernet0.virtualDev="e1000" to the file
  • Note: Sometimes, the line scsi0.present="TRUE" won't work. Change it to scsi0.present="FALSE". However, on the test machine, this was not required.
  • Speed-up tip: set the guestOS line to "guestOS = "darwin"
  • Save the file. The end result should look somewhat like this:

Config File

Note: If you make any changes to the virtual machine in the VMware interface after editing the file, all changes will be lost

Step 5: Configure VM BIOS

This is not exactly necessary, but it will make the VM a lot faster

  • Go back into VMware and click the green triangle to start your machine
  • Quickly click inside the VM window (this lets you control the VM)
  • Quickly tap F2 to enter the BIOS

BIOS 1

  • Use the keyboard and Disable "Legacy Diskette A:"
  • Go into the Advanced tab >> I/O Device Configuration

BIOS 2

  • Disable all Serial ports, Parallel ports, and Floppy Disk controllers
  • Press F10 to save and exit. The machine will reboot.

Step 6: Partition/Format the hard drive

  • If you have mounted the ISO/inserted the DVD, the machine should boot to the DVD. It prompts you to press any key to continue Mac OS X installation. Click inside the screen and press a key to start the installer
  • Note: If you are using a JaS 10.4.8 image without PPF1, the image will not boot in VMware.
  • After a long log/script of commands, the friendly installer screen will come up telling you to choose a language. Choose a language and click the Arrow to Continue
  • The DVD will prepare the installer and the main screen will come up
  • In the Utilities menu, choose Disk Utility
  • In Disk Utility, choose your VMware hard drive from the left. In the main area, click the Partition tab
  • Set the "Volume Scheme" to one partition
  • Give the partition a name
  • Make sure the format is set to "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"
  • Make sure all the hard drive space is used
  • Click Partition, Partition

Partition

  • Once the process is done, click the red X button to close Disk Utility and relaunch the installer
  • Note: If you are using a JaS 10.4.8 image that is not patched with PPF2, the new partition will not be usable. Get a new image OR use a previous version image (10.4.7, etc.) to partition.
  • At the main installer screen, click 'Continue'
  • Choose your newly formatted virtual HD and click Continue again

Install

  • This part is a bit tricky:
  • The Printer Drivers and the Hardware support are useless. You can install the Language Translations and Additional Fonts if you use a language other than English. You can install X11 if you want to (It lets you run Linux packages). Finally, choose the patch that is right for your CPU (AMD or Intel). Choose everything you need and click Install
  • Wait for the installation to complete
  • At the end, the virtual machine will restart
  • Note: If you get a Kernel stack error in VMware after installation, ignore it and click OK
  • After the machine restarts, if all goes well, Mac OS X should boot!
  • Here's a screenshot to prove it:

Install Done

Speed-up tip - After installation, go to System\Library\Extensions and delete AppleTPMACPI.kext if it exists\
Speed-up tip - Disable Dock Magnification

END OF INSTRUCTIONS

  • Press Ctrl + Alt to toggle between host and guest OS
  • VMware Tools is currently not available for OS X so you cannot run the VM at high resolutions. Some hackers are working on a way to use the Linux VMware Tools image to install it on OS X
  • The processor speed is equivalent to that of a low end G3
  • The VM is usable, and more responsive than PearPC

What ISO are you using? If you are using JaS 10.4.8 try using the JaS 10.4.7 Repack ISO.

Just a suggestion
Hi, I found that 'Still waiting for root device' and 'No debugger' errors only occured when I was using an ISO from the HD
Burning the ISO(I used nero) makes the instalation go work perfectly!

Thanks for the instructions!

PS. Please check the Forum for my "Date and Time error" If the macs clock resets on every reboot, still need a workaround for hacked ISOs on this!

lacresh,

Replied to your forum message.

Sam,

Uphuck 10.4.9 doesn't always work, but what you do: At the install options screen choose the 1.4i Base System and the Remove AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext option under patches.

You get the sbin error because you are mounting the ISO directly in VMware. Mount it in Daemon Tools or burn it to DVD R

@PCwiz: oh, i'm sorry that i don't read your guide carefully. I used the VMware Workstation 6.0.2, i thinks that's the reason why it cannot boot

I have just removed it and reinstall the 6.0.0 build 45731, and then install the mac os again. Oh, great, It works.

I used the HP 6520s laptop with T7250 CPU, 2GB RAM, host OS: Vista Ultimate.

ethernet not working
Hi,

Am most the way there, having installed mac osx no problem. However, I just can't get the ethernet working.

I have the ethernet set up to bridged, and am using a thinkpad x61. I do happen to be using the wireless lan, but thats not a problem in other vmware guests, where they just see my network as ethernet attached.

I have added the e1000 line to the vmware config file, and have also installed the maxxuss drivers. However, I jsut don't get an IP address when booting up.

One thing that did seem weird is that OSX is reporting that the network cable is not plugged in, and reports a mac address of all zeros, despite the address defined in vmware config file being

ethernet0.generatedAddress = "00:0c:29:17:c9:e0"

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Perry

follow up regarding networking
So, I just tried it with the ethernet plugged in and it sort of works, in that it seems to get an IP address and I can ping things, but for some reason its picked up a mac address of 00:00:00:00:00:00

As a result, some of the other systems of the network wont talk to it as they see the mac address as invalid

Thanks

I installed 10.4.8 with PPF onto VMWARE. everything installed fully, gave me the message saying instalation complete successfully, but after restarting the vm, the os keeps freezing in the same spot over and over again. it gets to the grey screen with the apple logo and the circle underneath spinning. After about a minute or so the circle stops spinning and thats the end of it... any ideas?

Thanks a pile, folks.. The install went very well on a Dell Vostro 1400 notebook running Vista (yes, I know) and VMWare Server 1.0.4 (the free one) with the 10.4.8 image suggested above.

I'd sure be interested in finding a way to get this VM hooked up to the internet without exposing myself to any sort of registration nastiness. Anyone with info on how to filter the phone home traffic please pass it along!

\"Operating system not found\"
I'm using a copy of the original Leopard 10.5 DVD and I followed all the steps above but right at boot-time, the Leopard installer never starts and gives me "Operating system not found" error. I've tried it quite a few times using different combinations like "other/other", "Other/FreeBSD", but nothing seems to be working. :s I'm fairly experienced with VMware products but I just can't get this to work. :pinch: It does try to read the DVD but does not recognize it as a bootable DVD.

Here's my config:
VMware Workstation 6
Intel Core-Duo 2.16 Ghz
2 GB RAM (512 alloted to OSX VM)
8 GB HDD - VM

Any suggestions would be great! Thanks in advance.

The OFFICIAL Leo DVD will not work because it isn't patched to work with Non-Apple Computers. And at this time, it's close to impossible to get Leo to work in VMware. Soz Mate!

Core 2 Duo E6600
2Gb memory
GF 8800GT
3 x SATA 300 disks
Windows XP SP3
Mac OS X 10.4.8 [JaS AMD-Intel-SSE2-SSE3 with PPF1 & PPF2] image

Install failed when I tried it with the ISO mounted. When I burned it however, it went through and installed perfectly. On my friends PC, it didn't work. Went through to the language select, then came up with an error related to CPU (he has an AMD 64)

But for mine it was perfect. Thanks for sharing the knowledge!

Ubuntu 7.10
VMWare Server 1.0.5 build-80187
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz
2 GB RAM
NVidia GeForce 8800 GTS
Logitech USB mouse, standard 101 key keyboard

Used the 10.4.8 .iso image recommended.
Could not install by just mounting the .iso image from the Ubuntu hard drive
Burned to a DVD, that worked, but abysmally slowly - to finish the install, I let it run overnight.
Finally got it to boot into the OS X installation.
This seems to have some problems with my DVD-ROM hardware - it keeps opening and closing the drive.
It also did not like it when I changed VMWare's processor count from 1 to 2 - got kernel panics during boot.

Somebody compared this to a G3. I've got a couple of 450 MHz-ish G3s and they're way faster at installing, booting, and running Mac OS X. Jacking up the VMWare RAM assignment from 256 MB to 1 GB didn't make any noticeable difference.

While this might be ok for playing around with OS X, it's no substitute for using the OS on real hardware.

I have a problem with the ISO I downloaded from torrent.
The filename is "Mac OS X 10.4.8 [JaS AMD-Intel-SSE2-SSE3 with PPF1 & PPF2].iso"
The ISO size is 4.588.544 KB

HOWEVER, when I open the iso file in WinRar there are only a few files listed.
All of those below 100 KB !

http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/461/macosxwk7.jpg

When I load the ISO in MagicISO and then point VmWare to the (e.g.) K: drive, the VM does a network boot instead of the ISO image boot.

I've altered the boot order in the VM to use the CD Drive first.

Even then I can't boot from the image...

Admin note: Had to remove large image and put a link, was messing up page form

Hi,
I am using the VMWare 6.0.0 Build-45731
On Win XP Pro SP2,
CPU Intel T2600, 2.16 Ghz, 2Gig Ram, ATI MOBILITY Fire GL V5200, 512 MB.
I tried the Other, Other option and windows NT as per the instructions given.

Using the following ISO.
JaS.10.4.8.Intel.SSE3.Only.Install.DVD.iso

I get the following error, when I press F8 and give the -v opion. I see a windows pop saying
*** Virtual machine kernel stack fault (hardware reset) ***
The virtual machine just suffered a stack fault in kernel mode. On a real computer, this would
amount to a reset of the processor. It can be caused by an incorrect confiugration of the virtual machine,
a bug in the operating system, or a problem in the VMware Workstation software. Press OK to reboot
virtual machine or Cancel to shut it down.

Any idea what could be wrong ?

PCWiz,

I got this to work on my new Dell Vostro 1510.
The first boot is very sluggish, took me over 1 hour, but it works!!
I tried to redo the screen resolution to 1440x900 and no luck, but its cool - maybe later on.
Also no sound, wifi or webcam, hopefully we'll get that fixed soon. Especially since I want to run Logic on here for my music programs.
VMWare Server works like charm and I am now using Virtual Clone Drive - the osx86 loads so much faster then Daemon.

thanks,
homie

I followed the instructions here and it moved well till the point that the installer asks to to choose language and then after a minute or so I get this message and then pressing any option button, the VMWARE machine shuts down.
"Because of a Problem, installing Mac OS X could not be completed" with "Shutdown, Restart, Save Log, View Log" options.
I have tried using BSD, Windows NT options also (other than Other) and get the same result. Please advice.

Some tips on making this work with GNU/Linux as a host:

1) You can't use the ISO image directly there either (weird). Use cdemu ( http://cdemu.org )
2) Make sure the CD isn't set to "legacy mode"

Everything else worked exactly as described in this doc.

Hi @ all,
Months ago i have installed VMware Workstation 6.5.0 build 118166.
( Used for Windows Server 2003 en Windows XP Pro. )

For a project on school i wanted to use MAC OS X.
I Downloaded only to try it out
Mac OS X 10.4.8 [JaS AMD-Intel-SSE2-SSE3 with PPF1 & PPF2]
From http://www.btmon.com/Applicati...rrent.html
Downloaded very fast ( Vuze 4.0, old name is Azureus )
Health: 90%
On the site it says there are 9 seeders, its not correct.
I connect over more thant 20 seeders.

After Reading this installation guide, it start loading the ISO file.
And now i'm installing MAC OS X, So far no problems found.

Thnx for the instructions

Hi @ All,

I've got a problem. I've followed all the above instructions throughly.

I've used the ISO that was suggested.

When I run the ISO, it doesn't seem to work. I get the error: 'Memory Allocation Error 0xdeadbeef'

Anyone know what to do, or how to rectify this problem.

TIA,

Jake

Hello everyone

Finally I managed to install it on my laptop with VMWare but after the virtual machine restarts, it gives me a message saying "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button..."
First I tried to install with the Mac OS X 10.4.8 [JaS AMD-Intel-SSE2-SSE3 with PPF1 & PPF2].iso but it didn't work (crashing and some other errors) so I downloaded another image MaC.OsX.10.4.5.Universal.Install.DVD(INTEL_AMD_SSE3_SSE2).iso which actually worked but after restart I got that problem. Here's my config:

Tablet Gateway 1.7GHz (Intel Pentium M 740)
1GB RAM
HD 80GB

VMWare 6.0.4 build-93057
MaC.OsX.10.4.5.Universal.Install.DVD(INTEL_AMD_SSE3_SSE2).iso

Can somebody help me, please?

Thank you
Julio

Hey, while booting the osx86 DVD I got the DMA warning, ignored the message, and reboot the Virtual Machine. Now after the message IRQ 15, it keeps saying "Still waiting for root device", in that place I got the DMA warnin the first time.

I got it installed once, some time ago, but I formatted my PC and reinstalled the same VMware version as I had before but I have this problem now.

Hey there, great guide. Worked the first time, once I got all the settings right, n00b. Anywho, got a quick question for you. It seems that anytime that I want to start up the VM, it says that there is no operating system found. But if I load the ISO in a virtual drive, make that drive the default drive for the VM or load the ISO directly into the VM as it's drive, then it will boot just fine, no problems....until I restart the VM and if the iso or disk are not present, then is gives me the whole no operatin system found error. I am running on a AMD Phenom 9950 oc'd to 3.2 Ghz easy. 4 gigs of 1066 DDR2, and my VMs are all on an external eSata drive. Any ideas as to what is going on? I would love to be able to load the os x86 VM with out needing the iso in the virtual drive. I can "eject" the disk once in the VM but due to it being a virtual dvd drive, I cant put any real disks in my pc and run them on the mac os x86. See what I am saying? Got a suggestion? Much appreciated! :-)

ISO (in Daemon Tools) Mac OS X 10.4.8 [JaS AMD-Intel-SSE2-SSE3 with PPF1 & PPF2]

Host: AMD Phenom 9850 Black Edition Quad Core 2.5Ghz
8192Mb DDR 2 800 (OCZ Reaper)
EVGA Geforce 8800GT 1Gb DDR 3 AKIMBO
Windows Vista Ultimate x64 with SP1 on SATA
VMWare Workstation 6.5 (with ACE support)

VM: 20Gb single file Virtual HD (VMWare default setting used)

Working perfectly thank you very much. Took quite a long time to install OS X though :/

Hello! For me it's not working. smilies/sad.gif
I have the 10.4.8 version, and 5.5.. vmware. I tryed on amd, and even intel pc, but the result was the same. Everything is working fine, I could choose the language, so the mac install started, I had seen the apple enviroment, but after a while it stops because some kind of "the virtual machine has switched off the processor", on AMD was the same. I restarted the install several times, but nothing worked.
Any idea???
Thanks

I get success with such situation after enable VT in the BIOS and update VMWare to 6.5. ( after you enable VT option in BIOS you need power off your PC and power on again - not restart).

Many thanks for the guide, it all worked superbly for me. I used VMware Server with an AMD processor.

Speed-up tip for those using VMware Server: Move your virtual machine outside the 'Virtual Machines' folder that was created when VMware Server installed. Then uninstall VMware Server and use VMware Player instead - it's much faster.

Hello and thanks for the tutorial. I'm having problems from the very beginning. I have the Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 image file with .dmg extension, I've been trying to convert (with ultraiso) that file to a .ISO so my Windows can read it, and as a result I get a 7.8 GB file with .ISO extension, but when I try to mount the image with virtual clone drive the virtual drive only reads a disc with 450 MB called bootcamp, I also try burning the image in a dual layer dvd but when I insert the disc the same thing as before happens. I also installed MacDrive 7 which is supposed to open Mac images (.dmg) but when I try to mount the image nothing happens.

Please help me. I've been trying this for a week.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

This tutorial is the best i have come across, But i am stuck with a problem, I am trying to install OSx (iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Universal PPF6 Final v1.1.iso) on a Lenovo laptop, intel Core 2 Duo with Win23K and Vmware server 1.0.4

I burned a DVD with the iso image since i get the
infamous error ('/com.apple.Boot.Slist' not found).
So now the error i get:
When i power on the VM, and i see "press and key to install" I start the installation from the DVD, the ISO image.
it says ..."loading darwin/x86"
i see a split second grey image with the Apple logo and then it vanishes and goes back to the same message "press any key to install".
this loop continues if i press any key...and if i presses F8 and continues with -v option i get the error "'/com.apple.Boot.Slist' not found".

Having said that...
I found when I started my laptop with the bootable DVD of OSX image (accidently)...the installation process kicked off nicely. I didn't proceed it further since i feared it might interfere with my Win23K installed on the laptop.

I am confused why the installation runs independently but not in the VM.

For those who's having these errors:

VMWare Solution:
- Mount the image outside of vmware, on some program like Alcohol or Daemon Tools (works for me).

Drive Solution:
- Burn the DVD on a lower speed.

That's it, hope it'll help somebody.

For anyone that is using DVD iso to drive emulation, if you are using VMWare Sever 2.0, you have to DISABLE ATAPI Emulation, switching the radio button to "Access the drive directly", this is under the preferences for the CD/DVD drive. Also, the ONLY drive that I got to work this way was the one I installed with ALCOHOL 52%, the free (drive emulation only) version of Alcohol 120%.
Drive emulation and VMware server 2.0 ARE compatible. This should fix any error like "can't read sector 694" or "system config file ' com.apple.boot.plist' not found"

No need of alcohol or daemon. You can mount directy the iso in VMWare WorkStation => on the same page to map the iso to dvd drive, click the button "Advanced" => Check Legacy Emulation.

I'm using VMware 6.5; when I set up the VM, VMW wasn't finding an OS on my burned DVD (got JaS Mac OS X 10.4.8 off of pirate bay....).

Since it couldn't find an OS, I selected the option (available in VMW 6.5, but not in earlier versions apparently) to "install the OS later".

So, two questions:

1) When I burn the ISO to dvd, should VMW 6.5 be able to recognize that there's an OS on the disk when I run the "New Virtual Machine Wizard"?

2) In VMW 6.5, should I choose the option to "install the OS later"?

Thanks!

so I figured I either screwed up my burning of the iso image,

Follow-up--

Okay, I've answered my own questions...

"1) When I burn the ISO to dvd, should VMW 6.5 be able to recognize that there's an OS on the disk when I run the "New Virtual Machine Wizard"?"

--> No; even tho the OS isn't recognized, OS X can still be installed from the burned ISO...

"2) In VMW 6.5, should I choose the option to "install the OS later"?"

--> No; make sure the burned DVD is in the specified disk, and install away...

Well, chalk up another one for these instructions, they worked like a charm for me (Host OS: Windows XP Pro SP 2, VMware 6.5, Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.5GHz, SuperMicro C2SBX+ mainboard).

However...

In order to boot the Mac OS X VM, I have to have my ISO DVD installed--it's like the installation process didn't install to HDD.

Any input on what I did wrong? Do I need to begin the reinstallation from the beginning? I'd rather have the OS be booting from hard disk, don't wanna have to keep the DVD installed...

@David Rose,
I had similar freeze issue. I stopped the mac VM, opened up my VM conf file [i.e. feeBSD.vmx] and changed following values:
guestOS = "freebsd" to guestOS = "darwin"
scsi0.present = "TRUE" to scsi0.present = "FALSE"

optionally added also,
ethernet0.virtualDev="e1000"

to me, scsi0.present = "FALSE" worked i think. smilies/grin.gif

Hope this will help you.

hi..i'm a italian boy..
can you tell me what this means?
"the virtual machine just suffered a stack fault in kernel mode.
on a real computer, this would amount to a reset of the processor.
it can be caused by an incorrect configuration of the virtual machine, a bug in the operating system,
or a problem in the wmware workstation software.
press ok to reboot virtual machine or cancel to shut down."

tahnks..

I did get this to work perfectly but, sadly, need a version of Leopard so that I can run the iPhone SDK. That was my whole purpose so I could code an iPhone app on a Windows machine since I do not want to buy and carry another computer (Apple) with me when I travel. No iso for quick download for Leopard and do not even know if I can get it in my VM 6.5.

I know this post is old, but I am trying to get a 10.4 VM so I can patch the 10.5 VM to AMD.

I was getting the "Still waiting for root device" issue for hours until I re-made the VM for Windows NT 4. Also, the "Speed tip" of changing the guestos="darwin" gave me the "Still waiting for root device" issue. Leave it at guestos="winnt".

Make sure your hard-drive is set for IDE and not SCSI like the guide says. Also make sure your cd-drive is set to IDE1 and that it is set to cdrom-raw mode, with no ATAPI emulation. With emulation on I was getting a series of EBIOS errors and no boot-loader screen.

Once you boot into the OS X installer with the language screen, continue to follow the guide.

When u didn't enter a mac disc,it will display an error like no operating system.
Run the vmware as usual with mac disc until u finally boot to mac desktop as u can see the taskbar icon and other stuff, then right-click on the disc/dvd-rom icon on the right bottom of the vmware, choose ur dvd-rom(ex. D:,E: or whatever {dont choose iso}) then click apply.Restart ur mac/vmware.See if it works. It works for me.i'm already doing this many times.

This worked fine for me, so many thanks for the excellent tutorial. I have an old Compaq nc6400 Intel Centrino Duo. I used Daemon Tools LITE and mounted the ISO. When I tried to run from the physical DVD I got EBIOS errors, so I went back to the mount idea.

I have yet to get the network running, but I disabled it as part of the install, so I'm hoping it will sort itself out when I try to tackle it properly.

Fix for "system config file cant be found /apple.com ..."

a) Load the OS in verbose mode (press F8 before Mac OSX starts to load, and type in -v as a boot parameter). Strangely enough, this seems to have solved the problem for me.

b) If that doesn't work by itself, try installing Alcohol 52% (http://mirror.free-downloads.n...8.7612.exe) and loading the DVD image in that program into it's virtual DVD drive (in the program, you must tell the program to create at least one virtual CD/DVD drive, it doesn't do it by default. You'll figure it out.) Then, instruct VMWare to load from there. You may also need to apply the -v trick above after doing this.
